Finding innovative approaches to technology is always a great idea. However, not all developments prove themselves to be as worthy as everyone hoped. When it comes to the Steam Controller gamepad developed by Valve, it seems that its disadvantages overweighed its advantages. Now it’s time to say goodbye, as the company will no longer be producing the controller.

Why is Steam Controller Discontinued?

At the moment, the remaining Steam Controllers can be purchased from the official site for merely $5, which is 90 percent off their usual price. The Verge discussed the sale with the representatives of Valve, and now we know that once the last controllers are sold, they won’t be manufactured again. So, if you were always curious to try this controller, now is your final chance to get it almost for free, but there is a limited number of them available.

The Steam Controller is definitely far from being perfect. It’s important to note that the device has its pros, and most of them have to do with excellent customization opportunities. It is possible to come up with custom configurations for different games and change control schemes whichever way you like. At the same time, the majority of players who tried the device agree that it’s awkward to hold because of how it is designed. The Steam Controller has haptic pads and doesn’t use joysticks. It may sound great in theory, but it wasn’t as comfortable as desired in practice.

The Company Focuses on Other Projects

As of right now, we still don’t know whether Valve will improve their Steam Controller or completely dismiss this idea. Currently, the company is actively working on other projects in the virtual reality world, including the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx.

Even though the Steam Controller hasn’t managed to become a sensational product, it was an interesting experiment. Who knows, maybe we will see better versions of the same concept in the future.
