Sony is enabling all PlayStation and PC enthusiasts to temporally obtain free access to a trio of Destiny 2 expansions: The Witch Queen, Beyond Light, and Shadowkeep, before the anticipated release of The Final Shape in June. Moreover, PlayStation Plus members can also experience Destiny 2's most recent expansion, Lightfall, as part of the subscription service's offerings.

Labeled Expansion Open Access, this event commences on the 7th of May and continues to the 3rd of June, just before The Final Shape's release. During this period, PlayStation users can explore the three expansions above and delve into the last four seasons of Destiny 2's updates at no additional cost. PlayStation Plus members, in turn, gain extra benefits by accessing the Lightfall expansion with the monthly collection of games provided in May, all within this specified window.

Sony's drive to invigorate enthusiasm for The Final Shape aligns with its strategic acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022. This enthusiastic promotion is a response to some challenging narratives encountered last year, which included reports of underwhelming pre-order figures for The Final Shape and statements regarding a 45 percent deficit in Bungie's revenue below its target, which was partly attributed to a noted decline in Destiny 2's engagement levels.

Additional reports suggest that Sony may assume complete ownership over Bungie—a currently autonomous subsidiary—if Bungie does not meet the financial milestones established in the wake of the acquisition.
